Here is Greg Glassman’s definition of fitness in 100 words ” Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.”

Only if it were that easy….
I was a trainer for 5 years before I found and fell in love with CrossFit. I knew what I should and shouldn’t eat, how I should workout, how and why to stretch and foam roll , but I never put it all together till I found CrossFit. It takes more than knowledge and desire. It takes support, coaching, community , equipment and accountability. The Community provides all that. I make jokes that when I row alone that I start rowing faster immediately when Cruz ( my dog ) looks at my rowing monitor, but there is truth to that. You always push harder with peers. I take coaching from anyone I workout with too. It does not have to be an expert to take advice from someone watching me botch a lift. I can’t see my knees cave in when I Overhead squat , but my workout partners can. I couldn’t do a single ring muscle up when I first held gymnastics rings, but I had a coach walk me through the false grip and the transition and I quickly found myself in support above the rings – Biggest smile ever on my face. Eating and dieting is tough. We all know what we should eat and shouldn’t eat, but then how do you actually apply it in real life. We can all write a good meal plan, buy healthy food, but somehow the garbage still hits our tummies. It takes help from others. It takes a community. Have fun, use the community , get help or be help to someone, encourage those around you and we all will be better because of it!
